Activity: Hats for special occasions
Learning opportunity: Making paper plate hats.
Early learning goal: Creative Development. Children should explore colour, texture, shape, form and space in two or three dimensions.
Resources: Picture of people wearing hats at a special occasion e.g. wedding, Royal Ascot; felt pens, decorative materials e.g. shiny papers, sequins, flowers, tissue paper, glue, scissors, a paper plate with slits for each child (see diagram) and two ribbons or elastic.
Key vocabulary: Hat, decorate, names for colours and materials used.
Organisation: Whole group introduction, pairs for the practical activity.
What to do: Talk to the children about when hats are worn and the reasons for wearing them. Explain that sometimes they are worn for special occasions such as weddings. Show the children the picture. Ask them to describe the hats. Which hat do the children like best? Why?
Show the children a paper plate and explain that they are each going to make a special hat. Working with pairs of children, help them to colour the plate, to bend upwards the segments and to stick on decoration. The decorative pieces could be flowers/shapes; bits cut from greetings cards/wrapping paper; sequins, scrunched tissue etc. When finished, fix on elastic or ribbons through punched holes.
Display
Use shoe boxes to set out the hats at varying heights, as if in a hat shop. Put out a range of photos of members of the group and celebrities and invite children to choose hats to buy that would go well with the outfits in the pictures.
Place the T-shirt pictures in large plastic wallets to make a big book. Put the book in the book corner with books containing pictures of the characters for which the shirts were made. Encourage the children to enjoy matching the shirts to their owners.
